A LITTLE RAIL KNOW-HOW

Railcards: the small print worth knowing

Use the right discount for the right people and journeys.

Choose by eligibility, not just price

Different cards have different age, group, geographical or other conditions. Our calculator is not an eligibility decision. Read the official card’s rules before buying or applying a discount.

Morning travel needs another look

The 16–25 and 26–30 Railcards generally have a £12 minimum fare 04:30–09:59 on weekdays, with exceptions for Advance tickets and public holidays. The 16–25 minimum is also waived in July and August; the 26–30 minimum is not. Two Together discounted tickets are not valid 04:30–09:29 on weekdays except public holidays.

Group and area cards differ

Both named Two Together adults must travel together. Family & Friends needs an eligible child travelling with the cardholder, and adult and child discounts differ. Network Railcard has geographical, time and minimum-fare restrictions. Check every traveller’s eligibility and both legs.

Estimate eligible spending

For a one-third discount and a £35 card, £105 of eligible undiscounted spend would cover the card cost before ticket rounding. Spend that receives no discount must be excluded. Use the calculator with the actual period and cost you are considering.

Carry your proof of discount

Carry the valid Railcard required by the ticket. Applying a card in this planner only changes the savings checklist; it does not validate your fare or discount all passengers.
