A LITTLE RAIL KNOW-HOW

Advance or flexible: which fits your trip?

A cheaper price is useful only if the ticket suits your plans.

A booked train or room to change?

Advance tickets are generally limited to a specific booked service. They are sold in limited quantities and can be unavailable even if other tickets exist for that train. Check the exact fare conditions before paying.

Price a return and two singles

For a return trip, compare the combined cost of outward and return singles with an available return fare. Use the same passengers and Railcards. Compare flexibility and change conditions as well as price.

Booking ahead has limits

Many Advance fares are released around twelve weeks ahead, but booking horizons vary. Timetable changes can affect release dates. If you cannot see a fare, check the operator’s current booking information rather than assuming the train is full.

Changing plans can change the calculation

Advance changes normally depend on the fare and may involve fees and a difference in price. Flexible tickets have their own route, time and refund rules. Confirm these on the retailer before choosing; do not assume every flexible ticket permits every service.
